Burgess Mechanical are commercial and residential heat pump specialists, and we service and install all brands. Heat pumps have gone from a niche product to the default answer for a large share of the retrofit work across NYC and Long Island, particularly in buildings that never had ductwork and were never going to get it.
They also fail differently from furnaces and boilers, which is why a shop that treats a heat pump as "an air conditioner that also heats" tends to misdiagnose them. Defrost cycles, reversing valves, refrigerant charge, outdoor coil condition and control communication all matter, and a unit that is heating weakly in February is usually telling you about one of those rather than about its age.
Why choose Burgess Mechanical
- Heat pumps are a specialty, not a sideline. Commercial and residential, all brands, service and installation.
- Flat-rate pricing with the total upfront. Including complete job pricing on installs, with no hidden cost.
- 24/7 emergency service. A heat pump that stops in a cold snap is a no-heat call like any other.
- We diagnose before we quote replacement. Charge, defrost and controls issues get mistaken for dead equipment constantly.
- All work is guaranteed.
Our heat pump process
- Free quote by phone. What it is doing, when it started, and what the indoor and outdoor units are doing differently.
- Full diagnostic. Refrigerant charge and pressures, defrost operation, reversing valve, outdoor coil and fan condition, electrical, and the communication between indoor and outdoor units.
- Upfront total. One number for the repair, or complete job pricing if a replacement is genuinely the right call.
- Carry out the work.
- Verify in both modes. Heating and cooling both confirmed before we leave, not just the one that was broken.
What local conditions do to heat pumps
Coastal exposure is the single biggest factor here. On the barrier islands and along the bays — Long Beach, Atlantic Beach, the Freeport canals, Baldwin Harbor, South Merrick — salt air strips outdoor coils and line-set insulation far faster than it does a few miles inland. Coated coils and disciplined seasonal rinsing are not upsells in those neighbourhoods; they are the difference between a unit that lasts and one that corrodes early.
Placement matters as much as equipment. In Brooklyn and the denser parts of Queens, outdoor units go on roofs, in rear yards or on side alleys where clearance and airflow are tight and line sets have to be routed through occupied floors. In the incorporated villages, and especially in the Roslyn historic district, what can be mounted where visibly is a genuine constraint rather than an afterthought. On flood-prone South Shore lots, elevation determines where an outdoor unit can legally and sensibly sit.
For multi-family and commercial buildings, multi-zone and VRF systems bring their own considerations around zoning, controls and where the condensing units can be supported. We work on that scale as well as on single-family homes.
