What to do while you wait
- Shut the water off at the main if you can reach it safely. This single step limits most of the damage.
- Do not use an open flame to thaw a pipe. It is a genuine fire risk and it can make the split worse.

Why pipes fail where they do around here
The older the housing, the more of the plumbing runs somewhere it should not. Across Brooklyn rowhouses and pre-war Queens buildings, pipe runs sit in exterior walls and unheated shafts, and a cold snap finds them reliably.
